Illustration : 3 phases of black hole research
(Welcome to the second post of “Illustrations on black holes” ,which is a series of illustrations which is based upon & Inspired Stephen Hawking’s BBC Reith Lectures on Black Holes).
Phase 1: Well , actually no one thought that black holes really exist . In fact , Albert Einstein published a research paper in 1939 suggesting that Black holes couldn’t exist because the matter couldn’t be compressed beyond a certain point.
Phase 2: This phase was actually where research on “Black holes” started & this was led by “John Archibald Wheeler” (he was the mentor of Richard Feynman) , the person who coined the term “Black hole”. This was also the phase in which interest in “Gravitational collapse“ was revived , after World War 2.
Phase 3 : The modern phase where existence of black holes have been proved. This phase has been essentially been led by popular science communicator , by the likes of Stephen Hawking & gang ...
